Moon Handbooks- Oaxaca 2 Ed- Mountain...Mountain Craft Regions, Archaeological Sites, and Coastal Resorts
by Bruce Whipperman

This book is simply the best book on Oaxaca in English. The problem with the other books is that Mexico is simply too big and rich: you can't fit the entire country in one volume without skimping on something great. That is where Oaxaca and Moon Handbooks' other regional publications come in. This book takes its time, reports on every single corner of the state, and tries to be as thorough as possible. I only wish there were guidebooks as detailed and complete for Mexico's other states.

Oaxaca- The Spirit of Mexico
by Judith Cooper Haden

Each year, a quarter million Americans visit the Mexican state of Oaxaca, an ancient land where indigenous, pre-Columbian, and colonial worlds exist side by side. Photographer Judith Haden offers a pictorial love letter to Oaxaca, illuminating its everyday life in supersaturated blues, dazzling yellows, and pinks so hot they vibrate on the page.

A riot of color and commotion, Oaxaca is Mexico at its most authentic and spontaneous."

CD-ROM:
Oaxaca, in the Heart of Mexico

by Antonio Ruiz Zwollo

"Unlike a lot of guides this multimedia CD reflects the positive feelings that its authors' have for their state."

"Great. All-inclusive with incredible photography, wonderful music and important travel facts. A must for anyone planning a trip there."

Oaxacan Ceramics -
Traditional Folk Art by Oaxacan Women

Having been to Oaxaca approximately ten times in the past 20 years, I can appreciate the quality and beauty of this fine book. The reasonable price of this "paperback" belies its perfect format/size and its gorgeous photography, text and printing quality.

I've rarely been satisfied with "crafts" books, but this one has been so perfectly written and executed, that it makes me want to jump on a plane and immediately fly to Oaxaca, to find and meet the fantastic artists presented here.

Lonely Planet Mexico (Mexico, 7th Ed)

The Mexico guide is a good, complete guide. Filled with information, history and beautiful pictures about almost every corner of this gorgeous country. Reading the whole book gives you a good update on your history and geography knowledge! (Something to do if you are trekking around by bus like I did!)

Oaxacan Woodcarving- The Magic in the trees.
by Shepard Barbash, Vicki Ragan (Photographer)

Powerful whimsy created by the folk artists of a very poor south Mexican valley.

Please do buy this book, enjoy the lovely pictures, but then read the text. Barbash raises, rather subtlety, the question of whether these woodcarvings are folk art or a response to a commercial demand; he questions whether we are right to put our own "surrealist" readings on these wonderful little figures which are hardly conceived out of some sort of psychological dream matter.

Seasons of My Heart -
A Culinary Journey Through Oaxaca, Mexico

by Susana Trilling

Having visited Oaxaca after reading this book I can attest to its authenticity. A charming and informative book to read with wonderful recipes. A must have for anyone interested in Mexico and cooking!

I just want to concur with the other reviews and add that Susana Trilling is a brilliant chef, period -- in Mexican cooking or otherwise. I don't understand it, but she really knows how to balance flavors in a way that is unique, compared to similar recipes I've followed. What makes one chef good and another great? I don't know - but she's got it, whatever it is!

Live Better South of the Border in Mexico:
Practical advise for living and working.

I recommend "Mexico" Mike Nelson's latest edition as the best of the books now out on relocating to Mexico. His advice is clear, concise, and wide-ranging, and his writing style is engaging. In addition, for an extremely reasonable rate, Mike can be contacted via phone or email at the
numbers provided in the book, and I can vouch that he gives useful, creative, and up-to-the-minute advice for those miscellaneous but nonetheless important questions that come to mind as one
prepares for the move.
If you are thinking about or planning on moving to Mexico, get a copy right away!
